Finding a Vacation Rental

Start by comparing rates, amenities, views and conditions before booking a vacation rental. It is also important to review rental policies.

Keep in mind that subscription based Internet sites are simply a forum for owners to list their vacation rental properties for a fee, while other sites , like our site, serve as rental agents and take an active role in the process. You may pay slightly more when booking through an agent site, but rental agents will be able to step in if something goes wrong with your vacation rental. Also, rental agents routinely insure that the actual units are maintained and ready for you. Otherwise, you may encounter an unpleasant surprise when you arrive.

Beware of scams. How can you be sure the vacation rental actually exists or belongs to the person you are paying your money to ? Does the vacation rental have an 800 number ? Is the property listed on an agent website ? This is another reason to rent from a bona fide vacation rental agent. Here are some things to look for...taxes are collected. It is the law in Oregon and Deschutes County. If taxes are not collected, they are operating illegally or it is a scam..you receive a detailed statement after each transaction...policies are posted...

Start Early

Veteran renters book their vacation rentals well in advance. For example, summer vacations are typically booked starting in January especially by loyalists who rent the same property each year. Secondly, discounts are sometimes offered for early bookings. By the time the season rolls around, there is no incentive to discount because much of the peak season is already booked. If you wait too long, you may not be able to find what you want when you want it.

Know What You Want

Have your questions ready on your first inquiry. If you suffer from allergies, ask if pets are allowed. We do not allow pets. Does a member of your party need a bedroom on the main floor ? Do not forget to ask if the rental is professionally cleaned.

Can You Trust Reviews ?

Your best bet is to go to independent review sites that have no conflict of interest. If the review site gets money for their listings, there is a conflict. The big Vacation Rental Directories on the Internet receive money for their listings. If negative reviews are posted, subscribers will likely remove their listings.

On the other hand, you cannot always trust negative reviews. Often, renters who were charged for damage will post false negative reviews.

Therefore, reviews may not be as transparent as you think. In the final analysis, you can only really trust a review from someone you know well.
